Lee Hall: 'I will fight this'

Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall has spent the last year working on an opera epic starring for 300 students. Now his followers have left in a bitter dispute on sexuality of a character

During the past year, I worked on the script for my next project, a community opera by composer Harvey Brough Bridlington, commissioned by Opera North. The opera, which was due to Premiere July 15, ran for a day at the beach. All human life is there: the children in a school trip, grandmothers with sandwiches, dog lovers, tourists, even a landscape painter. It's Albert Herring Britten Death in Venice meeting, prepared by Donald McGill.

The story revolves around a single parent who had been dismissed, he is forced to take a holiday at home rather in Ibiza. However, it is totally incapable of having a quiet day on the beach and being attacked by students on a field trip for biology, local thugs - and all the amateur dramatics society Bridlington, which test the Parade Bridlington. There is something very dramatic at some point, your child is transported by sea. Essentially, however, is a comedy about tolerance and inclusion.

tests were conducted for six months. About 400 people of all ages are concerned. I am a great believer in the ability of theater to change lives, and this project was one. Rich, rewarding and exciting for all players

However, two weeks ago I learned that the main concern of primary school threatened with shooting nearly 300 children involved in production. They had problems with the script, and requested a list of changes. "Pipi", and the use of "stupid" as an insult as opposed a. The composer and I work with the school and Opera North to get a version that works for everyone.

But last week, we had reached an impasse. The protagonist of the opera is a gay artist, retired, and in one scene, he is teased. At the request of the school, I agreed to moderate the violence of language in this scene, but the defense is not the direct nature of their sexuality. Back Word of the Opera North unless I removed the lines "I'm gay" and "I prefer a boy to a girl," the whole project was in danger. (It was too late to replace 300 schools.)

demand seemed to come from a totally different era. I must be a mistake, and I support Opera North in search of a way to bypass the hysteria completely obsolete. I was surprised when he accepted the position of the school. I was asked several times to remove the references to nature for adults to be gay.

Ironically, the opera was due to take place the same weekend gala of the year the great success of Billy Elliot Youth Theatre Project. Last year, he convinced Working Title Films (who adapted Billy Elliot) to fund a national project that allows young halls across the country put in musical productions. A gala was held at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, where the best artists in the region came to share their work. It was overwhelming, with hundreds of children singing passionately politics, sexuality and the intricacies of labor disputes, Working Title immediately pledged to do it again
