Failing schools and shifting education policy: lessons from my headship

In 2007, RJ Mitchell Primary School in Essex was threatened with closure. Chief Barry Lee explains why he took on the task and how the school has become a success story

Can you tell us a little about your teaching experience?

My mother is a teacher and when I finished my studies in history went to work during their school as supervisor noon, which is when I realized that I wanted to teach. I started as a kindergarten teacher in Camden. Then I met a girl from Essex and Southend went to the place where I got a job in Vange Primary School. At that time, I worked with a lot of older teachers and courses, so I was often the only man in the room - but I do not want to be judged by my novelty factor. I believe that my experience in the foundation has had a huge impact on me. It is home to personalized learning. If children are in dinosaur dinosaur after drawing up a table. Foundation is where the questions begin, every thought and "thunk" can begin, we must not stop there.

was his plan to become a leader?

Not really, but it happened. I went to kindergarten at the head of a key stage, then became deputy director Thurrock nearly five years.

In 2007, RJ Mitchell Primary School was threatened with closure in a satisfactory way. Was the leader at the time?

No, came a few months later. The school was threatened with closure after the parents left the town hall. When I arrived at the school was very dated. Nobody had really looked or seen the SATS results downward. There was no work plans and the management was very heavy on top. The school's aim was to keep the kids really clean and quiet. Some staff were really very intimidated by the previous administration. So I got the kids calm and orderly and low morale survive despite its closure. It was a challenge, but I knew that I wanted to work here. I could see where you could make changes and I liked the staff we encountered. My boss was acting deputy chief and was quite hostile to the blue-eyed boy come - but had to retire in July, when I started in January. He was one of the first difficult months. However, other staff members to take me aside and support me. We have a wonderful SEN coordinator, Margaret McCarthy, without whom we could not have before. In September I named my new assistant, Kevin Lee.

What is the importance of an assistant and support like-minded SLT?

Vital. Kevin could see immediately that there was a link. We feel we have a similar vision. When I'm here, I know that Kevin will make the same decisions for me. As chief must rely on both your TSL.

How did moral construction of teachers, parents and students?

In this school, students and parents are not the problem, it is the policy of the school, they were at fault. For example, parents had to leave their (sometimes crying) children in the door and not allowed in the classroom. Parents wishing to participate more, they felt so ostracized. A mother wrote to me and told me he had set his heart at school - I kept this note, it meant a lot to me. The students were very quiet. I love children and I want to talk enthusiastically about their learning. I want to think deeply. As a nation, I think we like the idea shallow and deep reflection to find something awkward but children naturally want to ask questions and I'm all ears.

What is your management style?

What are the main strategies for moving the school forward?

It was a combination of factors. We have a great team and we have worked very hard to get our 97% in English and mathematics. There is no doubt that our partnership with EdisonLearning has allowed us to raise the bar.

Doctor Who – review

The first episode of the new series, in its 50th year, was complex, avant-garde and utterly stupid. But above all was beautiful

Year

50th anniversary Doctor Who started with something that was not planned, but nevertheless managed to remind those of us who were seeing and thinking about how far we've come. And

ways. Fifty years ago, revere its infancy, but many do, that we saw mostly young, when he came to the villain / monster, a quiet man who knew he was a bad actor (in the way children do) cheap brushed BBC sheet or rubber heel wearing a helmet or something. This bad actor apparently kicking a wall made of tissue and saliva, while electronic low "woo" noises. Last night, our kids and young lucky with a modest number, a couple of quick and fun parts of the theory of space / time of unparalleled quality at the time Douglas Adams wrote eight questions very relevant Wi-Fi, privacy, and if you can still be smart to have computer skills, a poseur existential linked to a tablet computer that could temporarily increase one of four of his disciples "(or friends) qualities such as obedience, intelligence, consciousness, paranoia -. and a hot new companion for Doctor He does, indeed, triumph over the excitement of seeing a man (we kids always assumed) bad breath and a bad fall in the personal life some polystyrene, while wearing a nose joke bib.

The plot is incredibly complicated, since you could understand if you were a) the author, Steven Moffat, b) willing to rewatch eight times, so teensy scribbled notes on a pad while crying, or c) 12 years of age. So: do not make much sense unless you want bucketloads get your head around the Doctor being in a monastery in the year 1207 in Cumbria (was beautiful, probably Wales), while former teammate disappeared while Clara to take a call once totally unexpected accidental Tardis Clara from 2013, which had completely forgotten him, even if it saved his life before (and they are

main point, however: it was wonderful. Matt Smith - I had the chance to interview him once, when he confessed that all wool fabrics are disguised, but always brings his boots - skated on wildly more secure. Jenna-Louise Coleman promises wisdom, fun and refreshing cynicism - in fact, there was very little poor boy, if two doctors fuck. The chemistry between the two works, but still do not know why Karen Gillan nice not married to Matt.

'She began to smile at us' – living with my profoundly disabled child

Ailsa When born, it quickly became apparent that all was not well. Five years later, Saira Shah remembers what it's like to be told that her son will never know. But she enjoys the love that has brought her daughter

my baby for the first time after an emergency Caesarean section, I had a moment of clarity. Her face was bad - was wobbly and his eyes were of different sizes. Then, a switch flipped in my head - and I found myself face the most pleasant and best. The idea filled me, obvious and overwhelming: I am a mother

I was afraid that I could not be sure of the mother. Should not be very good with babies. I thought of it as a seed that feeds. Some layers and will soon on his feet and my partner Scott and I had a lot of fun helping them discover the wonderful adventure that is the world.

We had a wonderful day together at the hospital. The doctor came and said Ailsa. "A1 - perfect" I tried to make him eat. Again and again gaping mouth, shark, and it would make a comic stab in my chest. But something kept going wrong, I would snake his body back, away from me, and then his warm body curled up on my chest again. I did not like: I had read enough about breastfeeding mothers and to know that you do not need to worry too much, do not overreact

As we fell asleep, her and me, skin to skin, in my narrow hospital bed, I thought I might actually be good at it. A nurse woke us up. "My God, Mom, get a body suit for the baby - it'll catch your death." I tried, groggy to protest against Ailsa was not cold - if something was too hot - but it was carried Scott and valiantly struggling against his bonds

could then see the fist trembling. Scott shouted, "She had a crisis!"

The following week, the hospital is a whirlwind of horrible memories. There was no evidence of intrusion and global - as if all the doctors at the hospital wanted to get into the act. But nobody says anything until we were sure.

The powerful attraction of motherhood Ailsa pulled me by telling me that everything would be fine. A doctor blurted it is sighted -. And immediately switch flipped in my head, and the best team in the world has become a darling girl with glasses huge eccentric visionary looking over a school photo

As slowly realized that I would have problems, I prayed that their disability is only physical. At the end of the week, we finally told the truth: Ailsa was born with what they called a "shopping list" of brain abnormalities. They were so devastating ("diffuse, comprehensive and thorough" in medical jargon and) that large parts of his brain had simply failed to form.

would profoundly mentally and physically disabled. She would never walk or talk, you never know what we are. As she grew older, she may require ventilation and feeding tube, and certainly need cranes to lift. "She can do it in a wheelchair," said one consultant, "but probably only found in the bed."

switch flipped in my head and this time I saw a body lying on a bed tired, eyes fixed on the ceiling without seeing a feeding tube in the stomach, an oxygen bottle Meanwhile, breathing through a fan. I was a complete failure as a mother. I made a promise to my daughter house to protect her, and now I was totally unable to cope. Scott and I learned that some parents of severely disabled children in the hospital so that they are placed in foster care.

Care of

seemed impossible. Internet trawl found horror stories of parents who have their children in the air every 20 minutes of team work day and night, people who care program punishment leaves no time or energy for other activities. For the rest of the family, other children, all pleasures, must take a back seat.

Doctors

were at the same time encourages us to your notes "no resuscitation" and try to convince him to take her home.

Amid this internal struggle, went to see Ailsa in his crib in the special care nursery. Without being able to roll or move apparently he had managed to curl up on the soft tissue chin on his feet rabbit. I broke down completely. I sat by her bed and cried and could not stop.

thought I must save this child. I have to take her home. If she can find comfort in your rabbit's feet is not worth my effort? Should not receive the comfort of my own? Do not you already missed day of your life? I dodged, slyly, guilty, and kissed the top of her head. It was wonderful. Vacuum your new baby smell, feel the softness of her hair. I started to kiss her again and again.

Scott and I decided to take her home and move forward with a plan - made before he was conceived -. Move to rural France

"

Brodie lived in Pensacola, Florida, in 1985, still in high school and working part-time "bagging food in a supermarket," when in fact Huck Finn fashion has decided to go in the territories, even temporarily. The first train rolled illegally across Florida in Jacksonville. This journey of three days resulted in a much longer journey, inside and out, until 2008, when all of a sudden decided that he should "grow and maybe try to calm down." During this period, about 50,000 miles traveled by train, hiding in empty freight cars as the U.S. accelerated. On the way, he met some of the "veterans", but the most photographed children who rode the trains in recent years as a sort of rite of passage teenager Jack Kerouac on Huck Finn. The supreme court's problem: how to back America out of anti-gay bigotry | Ana Marie Cox

opponents of gay marriage do not like civil rights analogies. No luck: Doma is unconstitutional because it is unfair

U.S. Supreme Court observers groaned as the winner of a Peabody Award SCOTUSblog.com well considered and put all the chances that the Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) 80% . Regarding predictability goes, decisions of the Supreme Court are somewhere between the time of the next week and the career of Tilda Swinton. Maybe SCOTUSblog played in a little show, a commentary on the search for specificity and safety in a number of cases that focus on the ineffable realm of human emotions. Love, of course, but also fear and anxiety and even outright bigotry that goes against love.

is a sign of progress, perhaps, that the proponents of Proposition 8 and Doma just as soon pretend that emotions have nothing to do with his arguments. Darkest somewhere, could be a file that "love" was, in fact, what distinguishes a homosexual heterosexual. This dark age was, of course, last year, when the Protect Marriage Maine referendum campaign against the state to allow gay marriage with a statement that included the following statement:

"The basis of homosexuality centers around anonymous sexual encounters ... is large predator. "

Protect Marriage Maine

your site fairly quickly deleted this statement. In general, proponents of "traditional marriage" have learned to formulate their arguments with increasing caution with respect to judgments of moral absolutes. This has led, paradoxically, to an emphasis on green body central, almost unique standing to defend Proposition 8 was heterosexual couples who are responsible for the child - or, in the words of Charles Cooper defense lawyer

"state interest and the interest of society in what was presented as responsible parenthood is - is vital, but basically, in respect of those interests, our communication is that same-sex couples and opposite sex are simply not in the same situation. "

never Let it be known that they were the defenders of traditional values ??that have forced the highest court in the country to reflect on how far is that "with regard to procreation" - "background" no less - same-sex couples and opposite-sex "are not in the same situation." Should I draw a map?

If this was not annoying enough, Justice Elena Kagan has opened the door to more explicit material beyond your reasonable observation that even same-sex couples to marry in order to "race "

"If women and men over 55 years, there are many young people who leave the marriage."

And then asked if the logic of Cooper enable the State to refuse the elderly right for a marriage license.

allow

After asking "Are you rich?" counter of marriage is "an invasion of privacy contrary to the Constitution," Justice Antonin Scalia has invaded our minds by suggesting that the notion of what Kagan is "too old to have children" suffered for not not meet the cunning racist Strom Thurmond, who is the father of her last child at the age of 74 years. Thurmond, Justice Scalia said: "He was the chairman of the Senate committee when the judge Kagan has been confirmed." Powered by apparently this anecdote, Cooper agreed then:

"Very few people survive their own fertility."

Think of old screws, everyone! We could lose a lot of possibilities for the baby if it is the image that we were on.

Scalia was, as always, very nasty episode, talkative, strong misanthropic type the word "harrumph" bursts. Tuesday, barking questions at Cooper somewhat unfortunate. "Mr. Cooper, let me ... let me give you a ... something concrete, "he muttered at one point. "I do not know why not talk about concrete things." This led to the passive-aggressive offers the following point:

"There is disagreement among sociologists that the consequences of raising a child in a family ... in one sex because it is detrimental to the child or not."

Meet

the same script of two layers that all homophobes not working today, Justice Scalia was careful to stay away from TURN GAY GAY actually say GUYS (or worse): "No I take no position on whether it is dangerous or not, "he said in an I-just-sayin' there", but the truth is ... there is no scientific answer to this question at this time. "

Aa issues
time and public opinion has overshadowed the whole procedure. Scalia, for example, seems to be particularly aware that the tides of history and logic in Sun erode intellectual denies the extension of rights to gays and lesbians. His insistence, at some point, the plaintiff lawyer Ted Olson provide the exact date that deny marriage rights to gay couples "became unconstitutional" reads as Captain Queeg type of failure:

"I curiosity when ... when ... when is it became unconstitutional to exclude same-sex couples to marry? 1791? 1868, when the 14th Amendment was adopted? ... Sometimes, shortly after Baker, in which he said that even raises a question of federal fund? when ... when ... when it becomes a law? When do you think that it was unconstitutional? Have you always been contrary to the Constitution? has always been contrary to the Constitution? When was ... Well, how am I supposed to know how to judge a case, if you can not date the changes in the constitution? "

is likely that employees accused of stealing his strawberries.

Ted Olson, wisely, this monologue interrupted at one point apt rhetorical response:

"When did it become unconstitutional to ban interracial marriages and when it became unconstitutional to assign children to separate schools?"

marry, they say, does not change the definition of marriage, but also increases the number of people who can benefit. And allow different races to drink at the source water does not cool, gay marriage will not be any wedding revered and vital.

Lucy Meadows: why her death will not be in vain

Death Master transgender community push to end the persecution they face - what a tragedy that will never know

Now, I ask you to respect my privacy and to concentrate on my work," said Lucy Meadows, whose face was in all national newspapers last week. Why? The transition from male to female and was a teacher - and was chased by the press after his newspaper published a "history" in these two facts. Your e-mails show that she was harassed by journalists: "I am glad that I did not know he also has a backdoor that used to be at school before the press arrived and stayed until the end to avoid going home. ". Parents were offered money for pictures of her. It's a miracle I even got out of bed in the morning - I doubt you could, in your situation. Last week she died.

You can see why people assume suicide when news broke of his death. In a recent study, 84% of respondents had contemplated suicide trans - 27% of the previous week. Among those who had contemplated suicide, 48% had made an attempt. These trends are, however, generally before the transition. Studies also show that closet homosexuals are more likely to commit suicide than those who are outside and have social support.

What the research does not reveal is the wallpaper in the minds of people, whereas shame Tartan transition and paranoia. Can you draw it? How grocery store seems too expensive? How do you lock yourself in the kitchen to block the blows to the door? How you wonder why even care what people think in the store - why you should not go with a dress for a day and another costume? Why can take advantage of you in the street? Questions, answers not proliferate.

When I heard that Meadows had died, my first thought was not a suicide but a murder. Not so surprising if you know that trans people are murdered with a frequency depressing. The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) website has a long list of non-exhaustive murdered for being trans. Last year it was 267 in the world - a large part of a minority group -. And the average age of victims was 28

A petition for the Daily Mail to dismiss Littlejohn, to date, more than 180,000 signatures. Mail rejected the criticism as a "Twitter campaign organized", but was not this the same paper that criticized signatures (a mere 39,000) Jonathan Ross requiring dismissal after Sachsgate? Paul Dacre ignore the request, of course, but it would be crazy not to see how out of step with the rapidly evolving e public attitudes towards trans people.

There are many trans teachers in England, working quietly. If Littlejohn and his friends want to "protect" children of transgender people exist, perhaps they should stop harassing us and put us in their roles. CPAC stars: Ten Republicans to watch (whether you love or loathe them) | Heather Long and Alan Yuhas

CPAC 2013 was a platform for Republicans hoping to have an impact on the national political scene. So who did?

1. Rand Paul: Kentucky senator and Liberal Party leader

background

one of his first term Senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul has made many libertarian ideals of his father, the 12-term Congressman Ron Paul, the Senate in 2011, and kept Paul in Washington. Like his father, Rand was a physician (ophthalmologist) before politics, and the two men strung a strong coalition of independents, young people and members of the Tea Party.

positions:

freedom and states' rights are at the heart of the political family of Paul. Rand remained independent voice on a range of issues, such as allowing states to decide on legalizing drugs and gay marriage. His views on the fall of the defense outside the norms of one of the parties, with an emphasis on border security and less expense. Rand has made national news for its stance against drone killings Obama administration - who attacked a 13-hour filibuster

CPAC performance:

His speech earned him a standing ovation, and he topped the poll voting 2016 presidential candidates . Many wore stickers on CPAC and shirts saying "Stand with Rand," referring to the obstruction against the drone. Clearly pitching to young voters, he joked. "Generation Facebook can detect lies and hypocrisy a mile away I know, I have children who are the core, however, the" leave me alone coalition. " ".

2. Marco Rubio of Florida and Senator Latin star

background

Call to rebut President Obama's State of the Union address, Rubio seems to have been anointed as the GOP choice for a young , more diverse future. Before winning a Senate seat in 2010, the Miami Cuban-American elected to the House at the age of 28, and had strong support from the Tea Party faction never binds directly to these groups.

positions:

Rubio gave priority immigration reform, first pushing compromise on the Dream Act, then, to offer its own plan several steps to undocumented immigrants to obtain citizenship. He kept his word on taxes and refused to vote for higher rates, and they voted against the act which led to reductions removal, largely against cuts in defense spending. On social issues, Rubio remains a traditional Conservative: is against gay marriage and pro-life

performance CPAC:

Rubio and Paul opened CPAC this year and remain the favorites of the weekend. Rubio took a close second to Rand Paul voting in the poll of 2016 presidential candidates. Rubio crowd with this sentence: "We do not need a new idea It is a common idea called America, and it still works ..."

3. Ted Cruz: Republican Senator from Texas to ride the wave latina

background Republican A view that can not be president, but could make waves in the coming years is Canadian Ted Cruz. He moved to Texas as a child, as his Cuban father and American mother continued to work in the oil industry. Cruz attended Princeton University, earning the title of President of the Year debate - a contest that had lost the previous year to Austan Goolsbee, which became economic advisor to President Obama. Cruz followed a career in law, becoming the first Hispanic Supreme Court clerk, before running for a Senate seat in 2012. He won with 35% of the Hispanic vote and the support of a diverse group of Republicans Erick Erickson, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.

positions:

Cruz has even led against Texas Governor Rick Perry intends to immigration reform, voting against a path citizenship to undocumented Texas 1.65m and a greater power of police and border patrol. Dedicated opponent of "big government", said: "Part of the philosophy of President Obama and this administration is trying to do as many Americans dependent on the government, so that the Democrats can stay in power forever. "

performance CPAC:

Cruz was the keynote speaker at CPAC 2013, a privileged place in the program, and he went out and made a special presentation to Sarah Palin. His speech was a crowd favorite at the conference, especially this line: "There are many angels in Washington Many Democrats and Republicans in Washington have not looked at the Constitution in a moment.".

4. Rick Santorum: King of the religious right

background

Santorum was better than expected in his bid to be the Republican candidate in the presidential election year last. CPAC conference for the "true conservative" is the kernel. Santorum was elected to Congress in 1995 and became a senator from Pennsylvania, 2006, but lost his re-election by more than 700,000 votes, one of the biggest losses in the history of the state of the title. Later sued the Republican nomination in 2012, chipping away at Mitt Romney advantage as a serious competitor to last April, and earn a slot on the Republican National Convention.

positions: Santorum has prioritized social issues and is willing supporter, despite calling his philosophy of "compassionate conservatism." A devout Catholic, but the following evangelical who strongly opposes contraception and gay marriage, and even questioned the authority of the Supreme Court of Justice to rule on these issues. Also openly rejects the concept of global warming. Its emphasis on "family values" However, it was voted on international aid to help victims of disease, war and foreign debt, as well as various tax credits in the United States for low-income and research on autism.

performance CPAC: gave a classic "full value" Santorum speech, calling his people: "What shall it profit a motion to remove the countries but loses his soul? "Was a reference to a Bible passage in the New Testament.

5. Jeb Bush: The other Bush, Governor of Florida

background

While many in the world are familiar with the Bush family, Jeb unfamiliar. He is the younger brother of former President George W. Bush. Jeb was the first Republican to be elected twice governor of Florida. He left office in 2007, with a very high approval rate. His name is often mentioned as a possible candidate for the presidency or the Senate.

positions:

Jeb Bush recently made headlines jumping back their views on immigration. Once a staunch supporter of non path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, but has recently changed his mind. As governor of Florida, Bush was very popular, especially for lower taxes and education reform. He is an avid supporter of school choice, where students and the supporting documents provided for use in any school they want.

performance CPAC:

Jeb Bush was the headliner on the CPAC main meal. He and former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was the most virulent in the CPAC about the need to broaden the appeal of the Republican Party and to change the direction of the party. "In our country today, if you are born poor, if their parents did not go to school, if you do not know your father, if English is not spoken at home, then chances are against you, "he said. It was not very popular and a message could explain why it took its name from the poll to vote in 2016 presidential candidates.

6. Nikki Haley: Very conservative governor of South Carolina

Haley voted in favor of stricter enforcement of immigration laws, including a bill that would require immigrants to carry their papers at all times and that other companies prove their legal residence for their employees. It is also strongly pro-life, supports lower taxes and regulation, and is a supporter of charter schools. Haley won the support of Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin, and so far has turned controversies, including a trip to Europe $ 127,000 in taxpayer funds and allegations of marital infidelity.

Rabies: hundreds checked after transplant death

health authorities in five states hundreds of people to assess the potential risk of rabies from an infected donor

public health agencies in five states evaluate the risk of rabies for hundreds of people who have had close contact with an organ donor infected four transplant recipients, one of whom died, said officials.

About 200 health workers, family members and others who were evaluated for possible exposure in Maryland, where the man who received a kidney infection died, state veterinarian Katherine Feldman said. She said that fewer than two dozen have been invited to be vaccinated against rabies as a precaution.

In Florida, 90 people were identified as potentially exposed, and three were vaccinated against rabies from Friday, spokesman for the state Department of Health Ashley Carr.

Illinois Department of Public Health, spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said the only potential exposures were people who worked with the patient or the transplanted organ. She said that the transplant recipient treated against rabies.

health officials in Georgia and North Carolina are also involved in epidemiological research triggered by the death of the man from Maryland rage at the end of February, nearly 18 months after obtaining a donor kidney in Pensacola, Florida. However, state authorities have not responded to requests from The Associated Press on the number of people who value.

Doctors in Florida

Began to receive the vaccine this month, and nobody had symptoms of rabies. An expert from rabies, regardless of the cause, Dr. Rodney Willoughby of Milwaukee, said they have a greater chance of survival because they showed no symptoms.

health officials that the virus can be transmitted through the saliva of an infected person and mucous membranes, but man transmission is rare. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta say there has been one documented case of transmission through the bite in the United States. She said that workers take medical precautions, and "not sharing saliva with that many people in our day to day on events."

How do you feel when your brother or son convicted of murder when you are convinced that they are innocent? We meet three women who have fought for years to prove the innocence of their loved ones

Wendy Cohen based on a coffee table full of propaganda. There are photographs of the time took a bus to the prison to celebrate the 21st birthday of his son Sam, press interviews, a documentary with Trevor McDonald. All this helped to clear the name of Sam Hallam last year.

Hallam was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Essayas Kassahun apprentice cook in a gang attack in East London in October 2004. He was one of two men convicted of murder after a "joint venture" in which no charges initially nine accused. The joint law is rigid and inflexible: if your presence, knowledge or actions lead to a serious crime like murder, you may also be responsible for the

Cohen says Hallam was an innocent - young for his age, smaller than his other children. I was 17 when Kassahun, 21, was killed, and always said he had not been implemented. He was arrested on Wednesday and the next day, the mother of one of the boys arrested with him came to the door and said Sam Cohen was not there. Then the woman went to the police with your child to do the same thing, but it made no difference. In October 2005, Hallam, then 18, was sentenced to life imprisonment and jailed for a minimum of 12 years.

Cohen, broken and helpless, not knowing what to do. So she did nothing. She stopped going out and started to drink alone. When, in 2007, lost an appeal Hallam, collapsed. "I was crying by the courts, and Robert Fortune QC said there was nothing more I could do." Paul May, who had campaigned in favor of the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six, appeared in the court to support the family. "Paul said," Come to the tavern. I did, and he said: "This is where you come in." "

May

suggest two things: first, to examine all the evidence. Part of the problem is that the alibi was inconsistent Hallam. Questioned by police two weeks after the crime, he has his dates confused when asked what he did that night. He said he had played football with a friend, who told police he did not. In fact, Hallam had been in the bar with his father, but nobody had remembered.

Second, in May said they had to advertise as much as possible. Thus began a formal campaign group and created a number of media stunts. Cohen said pictures of people jumping from a plane and a program for a play on Hallam event held at the headquarters of the King in Camden. There are photos of the day we all went to Birmingham to present their new evidence of the commission of the Criminal Cases Review. "I had no idea what she was before Sat CCRC was convicted," said Cohen.

May

realized they needed the TV coverage. Sam's best friend was Bobby Hopwood, a nephew of actor Ray Winstone. Winstone was on board, and at the corner of fame tonight with Trevor McDonald decided to make a series of Hallam.

The campaign was effective and seemed inevitable CCRC grant a second appeal. Cohen said the turning point came when the new Thames Valley Police investigation. Ultimately, it was not difficult to erase the name of Sam the two witnesses who said he saw the scene of the crime, he changed his story several times and finally told the Old Bailey, "I was looking for someone to place the blame." Another said Hallam was "the only white boy I know Hoxton, I told him that it was Sam." There was no forensic evidence to Hallam bind to the scene and was previous good character. After all, it is his cell phone, the police had all the time, which provided a crucial corroborating evidence - a photograph he had been at the helm with her father that night

In October 2010, a report in The Independent suggested Hallam was likely to be cleared on appeal. The next day, Terry Hallam father hanged himself. Three years later, Cohen still make sense. The couple had separated a few years before Sam was charged, but remained on good terms. Terry was optimistic said. She was prone to depression. "Terry was the newspaper report in his pocket when he hanged himself." She babbles and bites her lip. "Now. Just when things looked promising. Mad. "

Hallam was informed of the death of his father by the chaplain of the prison and attended his funeral. "It broke his heart and could not even wipe her eyes or nose, as he was handcuffed both sides."

Hallam

was finally canceled his sentence May 17, 2012. After seven years in prison and 24 years, it still looked like a teenager. "The whole court was crying and mourning Can Paul left," Cohen said .. "One of my friends who is a size eight, I had - and I'm heavy Sam looked at the ceiling and the judge asked if included: "Someone should explain to Mr. Hallam what happened?" Everybody was crying. "

known errors of justice often come with a number: the Guildford Four, the Birmingham Six, Three Cardiff. Then there are people who spend decades unjustly imprisoned: Barry George, Stefan Kiszko, Winston Silcott, Kenny Richey. In almost all cases, were family members who were in charge of making convictions overturned. But what does this mean for the sister, brother, mother or father who sacrifices everything to fight for your beloved?

Brigitte Boucher is back on the scene. It is a very different stage of their struggle - still trying to convince the world that his brother is not guilty of the murder horrible he was convicted. Thirty-nine years, Dawn Walker was discovered near the River Lark in Suffolk, in February 2005. She was partially nude, with a shaved head, she was immersed in water and left to die of hypothermia, then burned in an attempt to destroy evidence, and abandoned by the river

Six weeks later, the brother of the butcher, Kevin Nunn was responsible for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Butcher still working part time as a nurse, but a large part of his time is devoted to proving the innocence of Kevin. Look at the evidence, she said: "It's all circumstantial."

Walker Nunn was divided Wednesday, February 2, 2005, and Walker had not been seen since. They had a relationship for two years. They lived separately, but I enjoyed holidays together, walking, exercise, cooking. Nunn, a seller of welding, has two children from her marriage, which ended in divorce 12 years earlier. He was known as a quiet man, someone who prefers to stay away from one scene to face. Even after his indictment, he was not considered a danger to the public. In October 2005, he was released on bail and was able to live independently and connect to a police station every day until the trial was held at Ipswich Crown Court a year later.

The prosecution argued that Nunn had gone mad with jealousy because he thought Walker would support an ex boyfriend. Nunn has always maintained that separation was inevitable and amicable. Who had separated before and had talked for a while about how things were not going as planned

Walker was found on February 4, and the police went door-to-door surveys tomorrow. A neighbor said he saw a family car money on Walker's house at 4:45, February 3. Another first said they had not seen Walker for about two weeks, but then told police he heard a fight with her boyfriend the night in question about 4:50 and saw a car with family money out of his home and two men dragging a heavy object in what looked like a carpet rolled to the back of the car.

When Nunn was charged, so it was Nigel Hill, a colleague of Walker, who has had a relationship with his family and had a silver car. Nunn and Hill said it was true that he had visited the house to look separately after being missing (they do not know). Nunn told police that he and Walker had been enthusiastic walkers were back on their favorite walks to try to find her. One of the places he visited was near where his body was found at the time on a trail along the river. The police examined the area and, unsurprisingly, found boot prints Nunn. It is an essential part of the evidence against him.

Another important piece of evidence is the fact that Nunn had a key to the house of Walker. From the beginning, he told police he did not have the key Walker - a few months before, the couple had separated briefly, she asked her corset and made a copy of it. He told police he was the key that was used to enter her house looking for her after her disappearance.

Butcher is as far as you can in a field along the river before turning the wheels in the mud. It rains a lot. We lowered by brambles and networks so close to where Walker was found that we can get - a challenging hike, bruises, nobody could imagine how a man with a body in his arms

Butcher

Two things can not understand the trial of his brother. Firstly, the case against Hill, who was accused of helping dispose of the body Nunn was scrapped when the judge of the court of Justice Laura Cox decided that there was insufficient evidence. At this point, the butcher took the same decision will be made on Nunn. It was not.

But the oddest, he said evidence of sperm. Only six weeks before the trial, the prosecution informed the defense that semen had been found on the thigh Walker. Butcher believes himself to clear his brother's name. "Kevin said," I do not know if this is relevant, but I found semen in her body and said, "This is great. Such is our get-out-of-jail card because he had a vasectomy. It can produce semen, but no sperm. "It has been tested and indeed there is no sperm. But at trial, the prosecutor rejected the sperm" tertiary "evidence - in other words, irrelevant. He argued that Walker had collected sperm in a bank in the gym locker room to the golf club and Nunn had attended separately later separated. (The prosecution claimed Walker had used the men's room changing that night because the woman had been painted a demand remains controversial today.)

Butcher

is incredulous. "This is a respectable golf club is an open room change. 'm Sure the men do not come to masturbate after her shower with everyone coming and going. "She laughed." It is not true, right? This is supposedly sitting on the bench in this huge flow of sperm failed on the leg. Absurd. " Prosecutors dismissed the possibility of a sexual murder, saying that Nunn had killed because he was jealous.

Butcher

never believed that her brother is guilty? "No, I still think they realize they made a big mistake." Even after being convicted in November 2006, was convinced that the sale has been used in a few months. "I have no idea what, seven years later, we would still fight for forensics." Butcher recently given hope when the Supreme Court granted a hearing on the non-disclosure in this case, but she knows that this is far from being a new call.

Kevin had already been in trouble before? She shakes her head. "I got a speeding ticket, and once bought a motorcycle he knew had been stolen. We came from a council flat, mounted, and better than I could. My father was a truck driver and 30-40 years before a farm worker. My mother was very proud. "She looked embarrassed." I always thought he was better than everyone, and in the end I think he thought. Donna My sister has a beautiful house in France, Kevin had his home and while he was divorced, had two beautiful children. "

The family moved to Bury St Edmunds been sentenced Nunn. His hometown is too small, the inevitable crime. "I know people in other campaigns can not work .. are depressed and can not function Believe me I understand that there have been difficult times, but we must continue to fight, if I do not win. Already took the life of Kevin car. "

Butcher is not only an activist, she has become a sort of detective. She believes that the only way he can prove his brother's innocence is to prove that someone else killed Walker. They often spend the weekend with her friend Carol investigate a real detective, asking people if they know something about the crime. "People knock on the face, because they think the police are doing the right thing or do not want to get involved."

Butcher

Nunn remembers very well when he was sentenced. "I ran into the hallway, throwing everything I had in my hands and shouting. I looked at my father and I thought, what really happened? "She swallowed." We had all our prepared statement - "Thanks to the jury to make the right decision." We were not so sure. "

Boucher said his family struggle for justice can be lonely. While her sister and her parents have campaigned for Nunn, his wife was a witness, describing him as a jealous man, and his children showed no interest in campaigning for him. She knows that her family tracing upsets Walker, who believe Nunn guilty, but says he must continue the search for evidence to undermine the prosecution. She thinks she knows who killed Walker, but, of course, whenever the police or CPS to hear his version of events is different.

Nunn
She and write to each other all the time. She tells him what is happening in your life, create a sense of belonging in the world, he will ask the coaches or socks, or draw diagrams of what he thinks actually happened, or tell your sister you create have discovered a new piece of the puzzle and ask if they can search.

set rings. It Nunn. It is the speaker phone, and within seconds he makes his case. "I want the facts on the murder dawn I was not involved I'm innocent ... It was a fantastic event that was put in this room I have only a few seconds, sorry .. I call Friday is better than I can do. "

The innocence of childish humour

I had doubts about stand-up comedy for children, but it was a welcome relief from the brand of humor Frankie Boyle

Something strange happened on the way for me to write this column. Two funny things. In fact, come to think of it, one of them was not so funny. Firstly, I took my youngest daughters, Eva, 10, and Louise, six, to see the stand-up comedy James Campbell for children on the South Bank Centre in London. Second, accidentally read some "jokes", wrote about the victims of the hostages in the BP plant in Algeria by Frankie Boyle. (My sister-in-law brother, indeed, was one of the British victims. Has been torn to pieces. Boom Boom, eh Frankie?)

First, James Campbell. I had doubts that "stand for children" had a meaning. Louise shares my concerns. "Is there someone else in the series?" Murmured dryly, after 10 minutes.

In fact, James was fun, but perhaps adults and older children have more jokes Eva. But I lost my doubts about the effectiveness of a particular "stand up comedian for children could be.

much of the comedy Campbell was like comedy for adults, purely observational. However, focused on the things that are essential to the lives of children - lollipop ladies, scooters, babies, high visibility jackets on field trips, play time - rather than, for example, work and sex. There were lots of jokes about the elderly. This is, I suppose, is the fear of decay and death - ". Laugh relief" the Campbell lot of miles on the idea of ??a bathroom with a door on it to wrinkliness elderly and wrinkled ridiculous two or three generations before the hearing.

am cautious on the analysis of humor. If I tried to understand why my kids are so much fun - the fact that I am old, I have a penis and a hairy ass, smell, pleasure, etc. - I could find myself embarrassed by the fact that they are actually showing concern about emergency primary caries, sexuality and death, and the Electra complex desire to kill his father.
