Failing schools and shifting education policy: lessons from my headship

In 2007, RJ Mitchell Primary School in Essex was threatened with closure. Chief Barry Lee explains why he took on the task and how the school has become a success story

Can you tell us a little about your teaching experience?

My mother is a teacher and when I finished my studies in history went to work during their school as supervisor noon, which is when I realized that I wanted to teach. I started as a kindergarten teacher in Camden. Then I met a girl from Essex and Southend went to the place where I got a job in Vange Primary School. At that time, I worked with a lot of older teachers and courses, so I was often the only man in the room - but I do not want to be judged by my novelty factor. I believe that my experience in the foundation has had a huge impact on me. It is home to personalized learning. If children are in dinosaur dinosaur after drawing up a table. Foundation is where the questions begin, every thought and "thunk" can begin, we must not stop there.

was his plan to become a leader?

Not really, but it happened. I went to kindergarten at the head of a key stage, then became deputy director Thurrock nearly five years.

In 2007, RJ Mitchell Primary School was threatened with closure in a satisfactory way. Was the leader at the time?

No, came a few months later. The school was threatened with closure after the parents left the town hall. When I arrived at the school was very dated. Nobody had really looked or seen the SATS results downward. There was no work plans and the management was very heavy on top. The school's aim was to keep the kids really clean and quiet. Some staff were really very intimidated by the previous administration. So I got the kids calm and orderly and low morale survive despite its closure. It was a challenge, but I knew that I wanted to work here. I could see where you could make changes and I liked the staff we encountered. My boss was acting deputy chief and was quite hostile to the blue-eyed boy come - but had to retire in July, when I started in January. He was one of the first difficult months. However, other staff members to take me aside and support me. We have a wonderful SEN coordinator, Margaret McCarthy, without whom we could not have before. In September I named my new assistant, Kevin Lee.

What is the importance of an assistant and support like-minded SLT?

Vital. Kevin could see immediately that there was a link. We feel we have a similar vision. When I'm here, I know that Kevin will make the same decisions for me. As chief must rely on both your TSL.

How did moral construction of teachers, parents and students?

In this school, students and parents are not the problem, it is the policy of the school, they were at fault. For example, parents had to leave their (sometimes crying) children in the door and not allowed in the classroom. Parents wishing to participate more, they felt so ostracized. A mother wrote to me and told me he had set his heart at school - I kept this note, it meant a lot to me. The students were very quiet. I love children and I want to talk enthusiastically about their learning. I want to think deeply. As a nation, I think we like the idea shallow and deep reflection to find something awkward but children naturally want to ask questions and I'm all ears.

What is your management style?

What are the main strategies for moving the school forward?

It was a combination of factors. We have a great team and we have worked very hard to get our 97% in English and mathematics. There is no doubt that our partnership with EdisonLearning has allowed us to raise the bar.
