Singapore government urged to give maids the day off

Minister proposed a mandatory day of rest for all domestic workers revived a longstanding debate on workers' rights

If you are a maid in Singapore, there is no such thing as the weekend. Since employers are not legally required to grant time off, endless weeks.

In the countries which officially working time in the world, where one in six families have domestic help, the legal right to a rest day long seemed unthinkable for women.

But the suggestion of a government minister who required a rest day could minimize stress has revived a longstanding debate in Singapore on workers' rights.

Halimah Yacob, Singapore Minister for Community Development, Health and Sports, said that domestic workers need a day a week to "rest and recover." The government said it is "to study the proposal."

But no legal right to a day off is not the only problem for the 201,000 domestic workers in Singapore, where it is perhaps not surprising, either a minimum wage. It is the attitude of their employers, and indeed the country as a whole -. This is in the path of progress

"Are they really so overworked girls?" teacher asked under Ai Choo, in a letter to the Straits Times local. "My maid has a day off once a month. Each time he returns from their output that looks even more tired and listless, and must recover from his departure.

"My maid is going to bed at nine o'clock every night and my husband and I are still far beyond nine to get into our children and catch up with homework."

floor is one of many entrepreneurs who react angrily to the suggestion, Yacob who came after the International Labour Organization (ILO) agreed last week to give domestic workers a day off each week, and other basic labor rights. Singapore, the United Kingdom, was one of 63 member states abstained from voting.

For some entrepreneurs that Choo, the real problem in Singapore "horse" mentality, so that everyone - not just the cleaners - could do with more time to relax

Singapore to work long hours in the world according to the ILO, scoring an average of 46.6 hours per week.

But not everyone can afford servants. In addition to wages, employers are required to pay a deposit of £ 2,500 in cleaning, as well as a monthly fee of about £ 135 in all standard two-year contract.
