Two weeks after Tropical Storm Washi caused severe flooding in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, leaving over 1,200 dead and thousands homeless, thousands of people were evacuated from their homes after the new floods, officials said.
Some 15,000 people were evacuated from the towns of Barobo and Bislig (Surigao del Sur province), San Francisco (province of Agusan del Sur) and Valencia (province of Bukidnon) this week, after the rivers overflowed.
"We had to evacuate a precaution. There were heavy rains caused by a low pressure area, adding to our problems in Mindanao, "Benito Ramos, director of risk reduction and disaster Management Council (NDRRMC), told IRIN.
In Valencia, 120 km east of the areas devastated by the washi, police units and the military used helicopters to rescue some 300 families begin the roofs, the World Food Programme said.
Washi first
worst hit northern Mindanao, December 16, with the coastal cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro affected.some 54,000 people in 53 evacuation centers around the affected area, while 400,000 others were staying with friends or relatives, but always in need of assistance, the NDRRMC reported.
