More evacuations in flood-hit Philippines

thousands of people were evacuated after flooding costs in the provinces of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur and Bukidnon

Two weeks after Tropical Storm Washi caused severe flooding in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, leaving over 1,200 dead and thousands homeless, thousands of people were evacuated from their homes after the new floods, officials said.

Some 15,000 people were evacuated from the towns of Barobo and Bislig (Surigao del Sur province), San Francisco (province of Agusan del Sur) and Valencia (province of Bukidnon) this week, after the rivers overflowed.

"We had to evacuate a precaution. There were heavy rains caused by a low pressure area, adding to our problems in Mindanao, "Benito Ramos, director of risk reduction and disaster Management Council (NDRRMC), told IRIN.

In Valencia, 120 km east of the areas devastated by the washi, police units and the military used helicopters to rescue some 300 families begin the roofs, the World Food Programme said.

It has been reported more deaths, but officials of Ramos and UN officials say that the last flood exerts strong pressure on emergency services.

"The issue of flooding is an obvious concern," said David Carden, head of country office of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). "We are already overloaded work, but we will respond to humanitarian needs and resources of the funds provided are available. "
