a report today suggests that children born in August are most likely to have less confidence in academic ability and to report being unhappy at school. The results also show that children born in the last month of the academic year are also less likely to attend the best universities. Jessica Shepherd writes today:



Researchers at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) ... studied three data sets, representing 48,500 cases of children and adolescents in England. They found that children born in the month of August were 20% less likely than their peers born 11 months earlier. in September to go to Russell Group - the highest class universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. They were more likely to take vocational courses instead.


Previously, IFS has published research which showed that children born during the autumn months: the start of the academic year in English - were on average achieve better exam results. Recent findings suggest that the birth month may affect the long-term consequences in adulthood.

Claire Crawford, Program Director at IFS and one of the authors of the report, said: "This suggests that children born in August and may end up doing worse than children born in September along of his working life, simply because the month of birth. "

Research has analyzed the three data sets, representing 48,500 cases of children and adolescents in England, showed interesting results. These are the main conclusions:

. Children born in August are 20% more likely to study for vocational qualifications than their peers born in September

. Compared with babies born in September, those who were born in August with a lower socio-emotional development are 2.5 times more likely to report always happy at school

. Those born at the end of the academic year are more likely to have less confidence in their academic ability and less likely to believe in the power to control their own destiny

. Parents of children born in August to provide an environment "rich" learning at home, on average, compared to parents of children born in September

selection data below has been prepared especially for us by Claire Crawford, IFS and displays data from three cohort studies in the UK are used for analysis - The study of Millennium Cohort (MCS), the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and the Longitudinal Study on young people in England (LSYPE). The variables are presented in two different units of measurement, the standard deviation (SD) and points (PPTS), which are clearly indicated on all three tables.

Claire Crawford offers these useful examples of how to interpret the results:

. The first row of the table [MSC] says that children born in September in the score, on average, 0.356 standard deviations (ie above average), while children Score born in August, average, standard deviation -0.461 (ie below average), children born in August adding 0.817 standard deviations below children born in September

. The fifth row of the table [MSC] indicates that the rate of teachers 13.9% of children born in September, below average, while the rate of 30% of children born in in August, below average, which means that teachers are 16.1 percentage points more likely to rate children August, born below average.
