Letters: Ofsted's failings

Although there are lessons to be learned from schools that are "pending", it is also possible to ask why so many schools and teachers in areas of severe deprivation do less (about 800 schools stuck and not improving, November 23). fear that the current approach can not handle much stick and too little carrot Ofsted. There may be teachers whose expectations are low. We must find ways to help them be able to teach well. Teachers who believe they can do, so it is more likely to succeed than those who do not. My own research suggests that teachers' beliefs in their effectiveness are both individually and collectively, and as regards the quality of leadership. In schools where leadership is transformational, it is likely that, collectively and individually, teachers will be successful and, whatever the context, the children learn. Just make the system more severe inspection is unlikely to be useful, especially in schools that are already in trouble.

. All Ofsted report should be treated with extreme caution. Many teachers, teaching at all levels, have reason to see Ofsted as an important part of the problem of education, not the solution. Listening to teachers and schools by Ofsted inspection experience. There are those, years of education behind them and whose work is valued by colleagues, parents and students were evaluated as "insufficient" or no more than "satisfactory" on the basis of a 15-minute observation by an Ofsted inspector. The destructive effect on morale and future work can only be imagined.
exercise power without the responsibility of inspectors. Are not required to provide specific advice to the teacher, let alone demonstrate how the particular segment of the lesson could be taught better. Having escaped from their own classroom teaching relatively early in their careers, never ashamed to show his superior skills. Let's have some transparency to Ofsted. Who appoints the inspectors? Based on what criteria? What training do they receive and to whom? What continuing training they receive?

few years ago, I wrote to the head, then Ofsted suggesting that each inspector will be assigned to teach for a full term in a randomized school for you reconnect with the reality of the face of chalk. I offer it again. Our schools deserve and need an Ofsted, strives to promote excellence in teaching and learning by supporting and training teachers, especially when it is necessary to set an example. The current Ofsted should be subjected to rigorous scrutiny and evaluation, with results published, such as inspection reports from the school. For the record, I am retired with 40 years of experience in education (state and independent) in three different countries.

. Since the mission is to improve by Ofsted inspection, the fact that almost 800 schools visited by the inspectors had not improved since the last inspection should lead to questions on the effectiveness of Ofsted, such as schools. However, judging by the comments made by the Chief Inspector of performance when presenting the annual report of Ofsted, there is no sign of what is happening within the organization. Perhaps Ofsted itself requires extraordinary measures? He is the Chief Inspector of the new person the right to implement them?
