Hawaii makes surfing official high school sport

U.S. state that calls itself the birthplace of surfing is to fund school championships like Surf Pro meet

Hawaii will soon become the first state in the United States to call an official sport of surf school.

Governor Neil Abercrombie and education officials said Monday the state that the waves will join the likes of football, basketball, volleyball and swimming as a sport sanctioned by the state preparation in the public schools, from spring 2013.

"Clearly, when you think about Hawaii, you think of surfing," said Abercrombie with a background of swimmers and surfers on the beach of Waikiki behind. Hawaii is the only district of the state of public schools in the United States, which means that surfing is available throughout the islands.
