fighting between rival factions of the army broke out in the capital of Mali, Bamako on Friday, in a worrying sign of the weakness of the armed forces amid new attacks by Islamist rebels.

But the struggle for power in the capital suggests that without the continued assistance of external forces, Mali could soon fall into anarchy and against attack, both between political factions Black rival rebel groups north and south. There are also indications that the Islamist rebels - apparently for continued military intervention by France last month -. Now, they begin to fight a guerrilla war

Friday, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a military checkpoint in Gao, north of the city ruled by Islamist fighters until two weeks ago. Nobody else was injured. It was the first suicide bombing since the French intervened. Last week, the rebels have placed several mines in the road outside of Gao, the bombing of a military convoy, killing four soldiers in Mali.

Malian authorities said the bomber drove up to the checkpoint on a motorcycle around 6am. He was wearing an explosive belt. Residents heard the blast walls of mud houses along the dusty road nearby.
