Bridging the arts and sciences divide

is good to consider Eric Schmidt tribute to the British pioneers of IT in its conference (Report, August 27) McTaggart, and the bottom piece on the role played by the restoration company J Lyons in the invention "" enterprise computing (how computers Lyons tearooms fed, Aug. 27). An important aspect of the story to note is that the idea came from two other executives of Lyon, Oliver and Thomas Raymond Standingford Thompson, who visited the United States in 1947 in the name of the driver of Lyon, Jean Simmons, to discover whether there have been significant advances in business processes that could be useful in Lyon.

They found few interests, but digital equipment used for engineering calculations. They are the ones who immediately saw the opportunity to automatically manage repetitive calculations can be used for business processes. Even explained how a team can be used to pay Lyon complexes. He wrote a report on his visit to further explore Lyon recommend the possibility of designing and using a computer for data processing business.

Simmons, were recruited from Cambridge as a Wrangler (higher math), approved the report and forwarded to the Board accepted the recommendation and subsequently collaborated with Maurice Wilkes University Cambridge in the design of Leo (Lyons Electronic Office) computer. Thompson led the project and became CEO of Leo Computers Limited.

. I have a professional development courses for academics at the University of East Anglia and a decade of experience observing how teachers react to new technologies. During this period, I noticed significant changes in attitude and experience on both sides of the supposed "division." Ten years ago, the conferences in the humanities are more resistant to using technology in education, while teachers of science and technology have been reluctant to consider any approach to teaching that has taken birth outside their discipline. These attitudes are almost unknown. Increasingly, the social scientists use technology in their teaching, and academic science and technology are using a store far more teaching techniques. Researchers are also working on the disciplinary divide our journey with scientists and teachers in the humanities work together and to advise others.

So my (admittedly narrow) view of the arts and humanities refers to the division, Eric Schmidt, has disappeared.

. In drawing conclusions for the ingenuity of what needs to change in schools, Eric Schmidt, is guilty of political trick just seeking to challenge. When Schmidt "was amazed to learn that today's computers are not even taught in schools as standard in the United Kingdom" could verify that they are taught as the norm in most school districts the United States. UU .. And when he found out (as one would suspect) that the answer is "no" when he could have returned and asked why not. His article contains part of the explanation.
